Last month, we released the McAfee Labs 2014 Threats Predictions Report, our annual look at the anticipated course of IT attacks over the coming year. Here’s what we expect to see in 2014: an increase in mobile attacks, ransomware fueled by the rise of virtual currency, politically motivated stealth attacks, as well as social attacks growing in size and complexity.
We will be discussing each of these threats and more during our January #SecChat, and we want to hear from you, the greater security community, about what you see as potentially the most significant IT threats in 2014. What do you anticipate the biggest threats to be?

Below are the seven biggest threats and trends of 2014, as our team sees them:
- Mobile malware will be the driver of growth in both technical innovation and the volume of attacks in the overall malware “market” in 2014.
- Virtual currencies will fuel increasingly malicious ransomware attacks around the world.
- In the spy vs. spy world of cybercrime and cyberwarfare, criminal gangs and state actors will deploy new stealth attacks that will be harder than ever to identify and stop.
- “Social attacks” will be ubiquitous by the end of 2014.
- New PC and server attacks will target vulnerabilities above and below the operating system.
- The evolving threat landscape will dictate adoption of big data security analytics to meet detection and performance requirements.
- Deployment of cloud-based corporate applications will create new attack surfaces that will be exploited by cybercriminals.
